Welcome to Ifagalz. You may ask yourself what the heck is Ifagalz as you scroll through the pages. In order to satisfy the curiosity, I had updated this page to ensure you know a little history of this website.
It all began in 2003 when I was a Junior at the Oregon State University. As a student I was given space on the university’s web server to create my own personal webpage/website so I did mine and it got me started.
I used Microsoft Publisher when I first published the very first website for Ifagalz! It was so amazing to me without realizing that no one can even access the site using other browsers outside of Internet Explorer. I laughed out loud these days when thinking back to those days but it was the best I could do.
I was interested in learning more about it that I signed up in a computer science class where everyone laughed at me when I introduced myself as an Anthropology student. Some gave me faces but I didn’t allow that to stop me from finishing up the damn class.
No one knows the real reason I signed up for the computer class but it was so I can use the Microsoft Office programs, FREE. I had to because I have no money to get them. Even the student versions were out of my grasp. I invented a new way of getting the Microsoft Office programs for free and it was to sign up for an Engineering program or Computer Science program so I can be allowed to use them. For Free that is.
All in all, it was a great success. I was able to use all the programs for free! I guess you just have to be creative.
How did the name Ifagalz come to be?
Well, it is kind of interesting, as I was sitting in my Garage contemplating a name for the new site, it pops into my head how interesting it would be to have a name reflecting the girls of my beloved Ifalik. And it was somewhat ironic as our tradition dictates that girls don’t go beyond Elementary School to have my own girls growing up very far from home, and having my cousins and my nieces in colleges not to mention a niece, an Ifalik girl in the US army. It is a crossroad for these girls so to honor that change in our tradition, I decided upon the name Ifagalz… short for Ifalik Gals.
I’ve incorporated different versions to stay up to date with technology.
To summarize it all, Ifagalz is a website created to honor the changes that have come to our shores, not only on Ifaluk atoll but every island.
